The popularity of smartphones and SIM card technology has taken over the world. According to a study conducted in 2016, the total number of active SIM cards was estimated to be around 7.3 billion

This figure bears testament to the rising trend of SIM card usage as it is almost equivalent to the global population. Thus, it is essential that we attain complete knowledge about SIM cards and understand the corresponding concept of ICCID Number.

Why should we acknowledge and learn about the ICCID Number?

  • SIM cards have significantly enhanced the process of communication as both mobile phones and IoT devices utilise this technology.
  • The demand for SIM cards has reached new levels due to the introduction of the 5G network.
  • The global market segment of SIM cards is expected to be worth 3604.6 million [USD] by 2028.

Hence, SIM cards act as an anchor through which daily connectivity is initiated. An ICCID Number is responsible for providing a unique identity to your SIM cards. Let us now deep dive into the bubble of SIM cards to debunk the aspect of ICCID Number.

What is the ICCID Number?

The ICCID Number is primarily used by carrier operators to connect the subscriber with different networks. The ICCID Number is nothing but the serial number on SIM card that gives it a distinct identity. No two ICCID Numbers printed on a SIM card are identical.

The ICCID or Integrated Circuit Card Identification Number is responsible for determining the access level of cellular networks. The ICCID Number generally comprises 18 to 22 digits that include the country code of the SIM card and identification number.

Why does the ICCID Number matter for a SIM card?

The ICCID Number ensures that mobile networks operate efficiently, accurately, and with complete safety. The number is used to connect a network provider with a registered SIM card. The ICCID details are utilised by mobile network operators to identify the subscriber holding a specific SIM card. Additional information about the subscriber can also be availed through the ICCID Number.

As the ICCID Number allocates a distinct identity to every SIM card, unauthorised access to any specific network is entirely disabled, in turn, ensuring that complete security is maintained. The ICCID Number assists carrier networks in managing subscribers efficiently. User details and usage patterns are tracked to elevate customer experience.

The number is also used to activate any new mobile device or tablet. Moreover, the ICCID number plays a critical role in activating international roaming amenities as the details present allow foreign operators to identify the home country of the user.

How Do You Find the SIM’s ICCID Number?

Mobile phone users can locate and identify ICCID details by reviewing the SIM card package. However, the ICCID number is generally printed on the SIM card directly. Individuals need to eject the SIM card from a mobile device to verify ICCID credentials.

Users can also find ICCID details by accessing the primary Settings menu and tracking device information. Individuals using SIM cards for IoT devices need to input a specific AT command to extract the ICCID Number. Individuals can also seek assistance from external platforms that help disclose ICCID details.

  • Format of ICCID and What it Stands for!

Each SIM card works with an 18 to 22-digit ICCID Number which is segregated by four sets. To understand the format of ICCID, consider this “891004234814455936F” number to be an example.

  • Number Set 1: Due to the implementation of a global telecommunications industry code, the first two digits of an ICCID Number will always begin with “89”.
  • Number Set 2: The following one to six digits represent the country code of the SIM card. In the example, the digit “1” represents the country code of either Canada or the United States of America.
  • Number Set 3: The mobile network code then follows which is generally denoted by a single or four digits. The operator responsible for issuing the SIM card is represented by this code. We have used Verizon Wireless in the example as the mobile network operator which is effectively recognised by the “004” number sequence. This code is effectively utilised to activate roaming amenities when a subscriber travels to a foreign country.
  • Number Set 4: The final sequence of numbers is distinct for each SIM card. This unique sequence defines and identifies the final subscriber. The “234814455936F” set represents the SIM number.

2. ICCID Number for eSIM

The ICCID Number format for eSIM cards and conventional SIMs are essentially the same. This is due to the implementation of the international telecommunications standards established for effective communication. Individuals working with eSIM cards cannot verify the ICCID Number as there is no physical card or package available.

eSIM cards are preinstalled on mobile devices. Therefore, details concerning ICCID Number can be directly extracted by referring to the device information sections highlighted in the primary Settings options. Follow these steps to avail ICCID serial number on SIM card details:

For Android Users:

  • Step 1: Unlock your Android device and navigate to the primary Settings menu.
  • Step 2: Scroll down and tap on the “Connections” option and then click on “SIM Manager”
  • Step 3: Check the SIM card menu where you will be able to locate the “eSIM” option.
  • Step 4: Tap on the “eSIM” option.
  • Step 5: Now click on the “More Information” tab to access ICCID details.

For iOS Users:

  • Step 1: Unlock your iOS device and click on the primary Settings application.
  • Step 2: Select the “Cellular” or “Network” option.
  • Step 3: Toggle on the eSIM option to activate.
  • Step 4: Go back to the main Settings menu and click on the “General” tab.
  • Step 5: Click on “About” and scroll down to view the ICCID Number.

3. How MNOs use ICCID Numbers

MNOs or Mobile Network Operators use the ICCID Number to effectively connect a subscriber SIM card with a registered mobile network. When a SIM card is inserted into a mobile or IoT device that functions on cellular connectivity, it then scans for a legitimate mobile network available within its reach. The mobile network then reviews the IMSI and ICCID details to verify if the concerned subscriber can access its network.

When it comes to activating international roaming amenities, the SIM card tries to attach to a relevant mobile network present in the visiting country. The foreign network then requests the home network for authentication.

A random authentication number is then shared with the device that is seeking access to the foreign network. A second authentication code is then generated which upon verification from the SIM card, network access is offered.

If the network authentication process fails, users will not be able to access international roaming amenities by hopping onto a visiting network. Only emergency calls can be conducted as individuals lose the ability to communicate via phone calls and text messages. Using the internet through cellular data is also prevented.

4. Are ICCID and IMSI the Same?

The IMSI and ICCID credentials play a vital role in giving a SIM card a unique identity. However, the concepts are different from one another. The IMSI is essentially used to identify a subscriber, whereas the ICCID Number is used to verify a SIM card. The IMSI links the subscriber with the networks as it determines and locates mobile operators that your SIM card is allowed to connect with.

Availing international roaming amenities becomes significantly easier with the assistance of IMSI. Visiting networks allow subscribers to use their services depending on the IMSI details. The foreign network verifies the home location of the visiting subscriber through IMSI. A SIM card may have multiple IMSIs but will only work with a single ICCID Number. Ensure to connect with your carrier customer support team to learn more.

5. Is ICCID Sensitive Data?

Yes! ICCID Numbers are responsible for storing sensitive user data which helps a subscriber connect with mobile networks. Sharing the ICCID Number with unreliable individuals may cause a lot of issues as the SIM number can be misused to execute fraudulent activities and scams. Users are advised to only disclose ICCID details to the carrier network responsible.

6. Conclusion

The modern era is dominated by the use and application of various technologies that serve the common purpose of enhancing communication channels. Hence, to keep up with the growing trends, it is essential to learn about ICCID Number and SIM card technology.
